Our Story

The story of Buchanan Missionary Baptist Church of Stamps, AR, began with a vision and unwavering faith. On September 14, 1906, Mr. W.M. Buchanan generously sold the land to the Trustees of Buchanan Missionary Baptist Church for a humble sum. Reverend JW Sims, a dedicated pastor from a United Church in the community, was chosen as the first Pastor. He led the construction of a wooden structure, built by the hands of the community, naming the church after the Buchanan family. Rev. Sims served faithfully until 1915, followed by a line of dedicated pastors: Rev. PR Neal, Rev. AL Van Pelt, Dr. T.M. Chambers, Rev. J.F. Kelley, Rev. J. A. Johnson, Rev. J.N. Harris, Rev. A.L. Dias (1945-1953), Rev. H.W. Watson (1953-1954), Rev. J.I. Thomas (1954-1969), Rev. W.R. Glover (1969-1991), Rev. M.L. Glover (1992-2011), Rev. Charles Smith (2012-2024), and Rev. A Beacon of Light

For nearly 120 years, Buchanan Missionary Baptist Church has been a Beacon of Light for the Community of Stamps and Lafayette County. Our steeple is the first you see after crossing Lake June, a reminder to keep your Faith first. We are a Historical Church, where the Late Dr. Maya Angelou walked, played, and worshiped as a child. Dr. T.M. Chambers Sr., the Founding National President of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, also served as Pastor in his early years.
